Women's Wear Daily: Intern Profile
If you live for fashion and know the difference between an A-line and pencil skirt, an internship at Women's Wear Daily is probably your golden ticket to the fashion magazine world. Today Intern Memo sits down with Alexandra, a former intern at the fashion industry's leading trade publication. According to Alexandra's experience, it's not all Devil Wears Prada at WWD, so why don't you just bugger off, Anne Hathaway?
Intern Memo: What in your background do you think most helped you get the job?
Alexandra: Probably my job as the Managing Editor of Em magazine, a campus magazine. I assisted in styling the photo shoots, so I think that might have helped.
IM: What was the interviewing/application process like?
A: I read ed2010.com every day. There was a listing for winter and spring Accessories Interns at WWD, so I emailed them my resume. I received an email from the Fashion Assistant asking me to come in for an interview. When I went in, he asked for my resume, looked it over, told me about the intern position, and hired me on the spot.
IM: What were your daily tasks as an intern?
A: I handled sample trafficking, talked to PR companies, and assisted on an outdoor wear photo shoot.
IM: What was the best part of your internship and what was the worst part?
A: The best part was assisting on the photo shoot and actually being credited as the Fashion Assistant for it. The worst part would just have to be the days where me and the other interns had nothing to do because no new check-ins had come.
IM: What advice would you give an intern looking to do the same, or a similar, internship?
A: I recommend being very persistent, never giving up, taking whatever you can get -- because something is always better than nothing --and to just be yourself.
